Mortician Marvin Merrick has discovered something grisly in the neck of a Jane Doe that’s come into his care. Convinced of her holiness, Marvin, with the help of a talking religious icon, turns the city and himself inside out to unearth the events placing Saint Jane into his funeral home.

In this issue Marvin gets a glimpse of Jane's reputation in a local market before being confronted by a freakshow drug dealer named Apple Seed, who Marvin has an uncomfortable relationship with. We also meet one of Marvin's friends: but what kind of person could actually like Marvin Monroe?
